On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, American actor, director, and producer Robert De Niro will be honored with an honorary Palme d’Or for his lifetime achievements during the opening ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, fourteen years after serving as Jury President in 2011.
Reacting to the announcement, De Niro expressed his deep connection to the festival, describing Cannes as a place that feels especially meaningful in today’s divided world. He emphasized how the event continues to bring together filmmakers, storytellers, audiences, and collaborators, comparing the experience to a sense of returning home.
Over the years, De Niro has come to embody the essence of cinema itself. Certain performances and lines associated with him have left a lasting impression on film culture. Known for his subtle, internalized acting style—capable of shifting from a restrained smile to an intense, penetrating look—he has secured his place as one of the most influential figures in the history of film.
