The Cannes Film Festival reached another high point on May 19, 2025, as Spike Lee unveiled Highest 2 Lowest on the Croisette, turning the evening into one of the most memorable red carpet events of the year. Screened out of competition, the film drew significant attention, blending cinematic prestige with a strong celebrity presence.
This latest project sees Lee teaming up once again with Denzel Washington, continuing a long-standing creative partnership. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, the film reinterprets the story within a contemporary American setting. It follows a prominent figure in the music industry whose life is upended by a kidnapping, forcing him into a difficult moral choice. Set in New York City, the film combines elements of crime drama with sharp social observation, reflecting Lee’s distinctive approach to storytelling.
Washington leads a diverse cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky, alongside additional appearances from artists like Ice Spice and LaChanze. Their presence on the red carpet reflected the film’s blend of established actors and influential figures from the music world, giving the premiere a modern and dynamic feel.
