Cannes 2025: "Eddington" and "Bono: Stories of Surrender" Take the Red Carpet

On May 16, 2025, the Cannes Film Festival continued its steady rhythm of premieres and appearances, with the red carpet welcoming the teams behind Eddington and Bono: Stories of Surrender. The evening balanced two very different cinematic worlds—one rooted in fiction and atmosphere, the other in personal storytelling and reflection.

The cast of Eddington, directed by Ari Aster, arrived with a composed and understated presence. Joaquin Phoenix led the ensemble, joined by Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler. Their appearance reflected the tone often associated with Aster’s work—measured, slightly enigmatic, and focused more on the film than the spectacle. The group moved through the photographers with ease, pausing for the expected moments without excess, letting the anticipation around the film speak for itself.

In contrast, the red carpet for Bono: Stories of Surrender carried a more personal and intimate energy. Bono, at the center of the project, was joined by key collaborators involved in bringing his stage memoir to the screen. The film, drawn from his one-man show, explores moments from his life, career, and identity, and that reflective tone was visible in his interactions on the carpet—calm, direct, and engaged.

While Eddington gathered attention for its high-profile cast and the curiosity surrounding Aster’s latest work, Bono: Stories of Surrender offered something quieter, centered on voice and experience rather than narrative fiction. Together, the two premieres highlighted the range of Cannes itself—where large-scale productions and personal projects share the same stage.

As the evening progressed, the red carpet once again served its purpose: not just as a display of style, but as a point of transition—where films, and the people behind them, step briefly into the public eye before returning to the screen where their stories fully unfold.
