MIPTV | 'The Traitors' Crowned Format of the Year in K7 Media's Annual 'Tracking the Giants

The highly anticipated annual report "Tracking the Giants" was unveiled by global media consultancy, K7 Media, at MIPTV in Cannes this weekend, with "The Traitors," earning the prestigious title of ‘Format of the Year’ for its outstanding performance in 2023.

"The Traitors" garnered unparalleled success, marking an extraordinary year-on-year increase in new releases, soaring from seven in 2022 to an impressive 11 in 2023. This solidifies its position as the leading format on the global stage.

“Good Luck Guys" by Banijay, is ‘The Rising Format Star’ with six new adaptations. "The Floor" by Talpa Studios is poised to dominate 2024, as ‘The Format to Watch’, fuelled by recent launches and confirmed sales, with ten new commissions following its successful premiere on RTL4 in the Netherlands.

The report also highlights the resurgence of format revivals, with "Family Feud" by Fremantle leading the charge as Revival of the Year. With a total of nine new adaptations, including both revivals and expansions into brand new markets, "Family Feud" exemplifies the enduring appeal and adaptability of timeless formats.

Germany, Spain, and Belgium emerged as the leading importers of new formats, witnessing a slight shift in rankings with Spain's ascent and The Netherlands' descent. This trend suggests a robust domestic format market in The Netherlands, where locally produced launches are gradually replacing imported ones. Spain experienced notable growth, with a significant portion of imports originating from the UK and Dutch markets.

As the industry eagerly awaits the next wave of groundbreaking formats, "Tracking the Giants" remains an indispensable resource, providing invaluable insights into the ever-evolving world of television programming.

Over the last six years ‘Tracking the Giants’ has grown into an important bellwether for the TV formats industry, and we’re delighted to be partnering with MIPFORMATS to launch it this year.” said the  K7 Media CEO and founder Keri Lewis Brown.
